What is PEDALO?

Definition

Pedalo-Radreisefreunde GmbH - PEDALO for short - is an Austrian tour operator with an international reputation specialising in cycle tourism. In its current legal form, the company was established in 2024 following the merger of PEDALO Touristik GmbH (founded in 1993) and Radreisefreunde GmbH (founded in 2012), and thus combines decades of experience in organising, running and arranging cycle tours.

The company's headquarters are in Engelhartszell (Upper Austria), right on the Danube. Local branch offices and logistics centres in Vienna (Danube Cycle Route), Trier (Moselle Cycle Route, Germany), Utrecht (Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Stockholm (Sweden) ensure on-site guest support in PEDALO's core regions.

Clarification: The brand name PEDALO refers to the cycling tours offered by Pedalo-Radreisefreunde GmbH and should not be confused with the toy and coordination device of the same name or the term commonly used in Switzerland for a pedal boat.

Target group(s)

Pedalo-Radreisefreunde GmbH's services are aimed at all travellers who wish to undertake a multi-day round trip, a distance tour or a location-based tour by bike during their holiday, without having to worry about the organisational details. PEDALO takes care of planning the route, booking accommodation, transporting luggage from hotel to hotel and, on request, providing hire bikes.

PEDALO's range of tours covers a wide variety of difficulty levels, from easy cycling holidays to challenging road bike tours. The focus is always on actively enjoying nature, and sufficient time for breaks, sightseeing or cultural activities is usually included in the itinerary. Depending on the length of the stages and the topography, each tour is clearly categorised into one of seven difficulty levels. The portfolio also includes cycling tours suitable for beginners or families with children.

For the most part, PEDALO cycling tours are independent, self-guided trips without a cycling guide, though guided group tours and some semi-guided tours (without a guide but with an accompanying coach) are also offered.

Pedalo-Radreisefreunde GmbH markets its range of tours directly to private customers as well as to other tour operators and travel agencies. Travellers with specific requirements and needs can have a bespoke cycling tour organised by PEDALO.

Trip types

The PEDALO cycling tour programme distinguishes between four trip types and seven levels of difficulty. Cycling holidays and Bike & boat trips are among the easiest types of tour (Levels 1–3), followed by the slightly more challenging Sporty bike tours (Levels 4–5) and the very ambitious Road bike tours (Levels 6–7).

Profile of PEDALO Cycling holidays

PEDALO's cycling holidays are designed for travellers who prioritise enjoyment. They are also suitable for less experienced cyclists; a normal office-worker's level of fitness is sufficient to complete the stages, which range from 40 to 70 kilometres in length. E-bikes are usually available for hire.

Profile of PEDALO Bike & boat trips

PEDALO's Bike & boat trips are of the same level of difficulty as cycling holidays. However, accommodation is on a boat, which is used to cover part of the route. Anyone who wishes to can treat themselves to a day's break from cycling and spend it on board.

Profile of PEDALO Sporty bike tours

PEDALO's Sporty bike tours are designed for travellers who are not competitive cyclists but are in good physical shape and cycle regularly. The daily stages range from 70 to 100 kilometres.

Profile of PEDALO Road bike tours

PEDALO's Road bike tours are not just for professional cyclists, but a good level of stamina is essential. The stages range from 80 to 120 kilometres in length. The routes follow tarmac roads, which are ideal for road cycling.

Core services

Accommodation in carefully selected hotels or guesthouses is included as a standard service on all PEDALO cycling tours. A generous breakfast is always included, and half-board can be booked as an optional extra on some tours. On many tours, there is a choice of different accommodation categories.

On all PEDALO distance tours and round trips, luggage transport from hotel to hotel is included in the basic services. Travellers should have their luggage ready for the PEDALO luggage driver each morning before setting off on the day's cycle stage. When they arrive at their next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will already be waiting for them there.

When designing PEDALO cycling tours, great care is always taken to select the route carefully. The lengths of the stages correspond to the level of difficulty specified for each tour. Where popular sights lie along the route, sufficient time is allowed for sightseeing. Sections of the route that are difficult to cycle are occasionally bypassed using transfers.

The maps required for individual cycling are still partly available in printed form, but are increasingly being provided digitally via the PEDALO navigation app.

The PEDALO service helpline is available to answer any queries you may have before booking, as well as during your trip. Should any problems arise whilst you are travelling, PEDALO guests can contact the PEDALO customer service by telephone seven days a week and receive the information they need in German or English.

On most PEDALO cycling tours, a selection of different hire bikes is available. E-bikes are now available on almost all tours, as are, increasingly, gravel bikes, and - on road bike tours - various types of road bikes.

Specialised tours and expertise

As well as traditional Cycling holidays, Bike & boat trips, Sporty bike tours and Road bike tours, PEDALO also offers a range of specialised holiday options, tailored specifically to the individual needs of a wide variety of target groups.

PEDALO Original trips

'PEDALO Original Trips' refers to those tours which are conceived and organised entirely at the Engelhartszell office by staff at Pedalo-Radreise GmbH. PEDALO is the direct tour operator and is responsible for the entire operational service chain.

Group tours

Guided PEDALO cycling tours take place in groups of between eight and twenty participants. The tour is led by a guide with in-depth knowledge of the local area, who also organises sightseeing trips and prepares a picnic along the way. In most cases, a support vehicle also accompanies the group.

Semi-guided tours

PEDALO's semi-guided cycling tours are a hybrid of individual self-guided tours and guided group tours. You cycle independently using maps or a navigation app, but a support bus is nearby and on hand should any problems arise.

Travel themes

The thematic categorisation of PEDALO cycling tours can also help you choose your trip – depending, for example, on whether you prefer urban, mountainous or water-rich landscapes.

Riverside cycling trips

Cycling tours along rivers are among the most popular PEDALO cycling tours. They are generally flat or slightly downhill, making them well suited to beginners, and usually feature excellent cycling infrastructure.

If you enjoy urban settings, your best bet is to book a PEDALO cycling tour for city cyclists. The accommodation is situated in particularly cycle-friendly cities, allowing you to enjoy city life whilst also exploring the surrounding countryside.

Cycling holidays for wine lovers

Many PEDALO cycling tours take place in well-known wine-growing regions. The scenery is stunning, with green vineyard-covered slopes, and there are plenty of opportunities for wine tastings off the cycle route. Some accommodation is provided directly at the vineyard.

PEDALO is an Austrian tour operator specialising in cycle tourism, based in Engelhartszell on the Danube. Its range of products includes tours of varying levels of difficulty, from easy cycling holidays for beginners to challenging road bike tours. The company has particular expertise in organising bespoke cycle tours.

The PEDALO cycling tour programme is divided into four categories based on difficulty: easy Cycling holidays, Bike & boat trips, slightly more challenging Sporty bike tours and very ambitious Road bike tours

The PEDALO cycling holiday programme also includes trips that are particularly well suited to less experienced cyclists or beginners. For those just starting out, we recommend, for example, Short and taster tours, location-based trips where you can take a day’s break at a hotel in between, or Bike & boat trips

PEDALO’s individual tours are also suitable for travellers who prefer to travel alone. Single rooms are available at most accommodation providers. Those looking to socialise during their cycling holiday will find what they're looking for on a guided group tour

PEDALO Cycle Tours arranges accommodation in carefully selected hotels and guesthouses with a well-maintained ambience and a pleasant atmosphere in good locations. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom with a shower and toilet. On many tours, there is a choice of different accommodation categories.

Families wishing to book a cycling holiday with PEDALO who require three- or four-bed rooms are eligible for various discounts on request, depending on the tour and the children’s ages.

All PEDALO cycling tours include a generous breakfast, usually served as a buffet. Details of what other meals are included in the tour price are set out in the itinerary for each specific tour. Half-board (a multi-course dinner, often with a choice of main course) can be booked as an optional extra on some tours.

Luggage transport is one of the standard services offered by PEDALO. Travellers who do not require this service should let us know in advance. In many cases, a discount is available if you do not use the luggage transport service.

PEDALO cycling tours are mostly individual trips, on which there is no guide accompanying you during the cycling stages. Anyone who would like or needs a tour guide has the option of booking a guided group tour

The travel documents listed in the PEDALO service description usually include general travel information, a list of hotels, a roadbook and/or detailed maps, as well as a written route description. To save paper and energy, these documents are increasingly being provided in digital form rather than in print. GPS data is also available for most PEDALO cycling tours.

The contents of the travel documents depend on the tour booked and the services included. For distance tours and round trips, luggage tags are also provided, and in some cases vouchers and/or further information on various places of interest.

Depending on the type of trip, requirements and region, PEDALO offers a range of rental bikes. E-bikes are now available on almost all trips; in many cases, a gravel bike is also available, whilst road bike tours often feature a selection of different road bikes.

The standard equipment for PEDALO hire bikes usually includes a pannier and handlebar bag, a cycle computer, a pump, a spare inner tube and a small repair kit.

If you wish, you can of course bring your own bike on a PEDALO cycle tour.

With PEDALO, travel to and from the destination is not included in the tour price; travellers are always responsible for organising this themselves. To make it easier for travellers to organise their journey, PEDALO provides some basic information on travelling by train or plane, as well as parking facilities at the starting point. For distance tours, it is usually possible to book a transfer back to the starting point at the end of the trip.

Travel insurance is not included in the services provided by a PEDALO cycling tour; however, it is advisable to take out at least travel cancellation insurance. PEDALO recommends its long-standing partner, ERGO Travel Insurance, for this purpose.
