Carinthian lakes loop | Round trip starting in Villach

The silence of the mountains, the gentle lakeside of the crystal-clear lakes, pure nature – located in the heart of Carinthia the entire region around Villach reflects this entire diversity. Already the Romans, probably the first lakeside tourists appreciated relaxation and recuperation in these thermal baths and even Paracelsus enjoyed here the healing effects of the thermal springs.

Following the Drau River, you’ll cycle north from Villach through diverse natural and cultural landscapes. On the Drau Cycle Path, you’ll pass Kellerberg Castle and the towns of Feistritz and Paternion, while meadows, forests, and idyllic floodplains shape the landscape. The cycle route continues to Lake Millstatt, and along the shore, you’ll pass through Döbriach and arrive in the historic town of Millstatt, picturesquely nestled between the lake and the mountains.

The start of the stage takes you through the unspoiled Carinthian countryside. Forests, fields, old farms, and small hamlets line your route, while cozy wine taverns serving hearty farm-style snacks invite you to take a delightful break. Passing flower-adorned farmsteads, you’ll follow the well-developed Drau Cycle Path through the Drau Valley. At the end of the stage, Lake Weißensee awaits, known for its shimmering colors and idyllic setting.

In the morning, you’ll ride along the peaceful shores of Lake Weißensee, before the route leads through a wooded area to Weißbriach. You’ll continue cycling through the idyllic Gitschtal Valley to Hermagor, whose historic old town, with its colorful facades and cozy squares, invites you to linger. The route then continues through the diverse landscape of the Gail Valley to Lake Pressegger, whose clear waters blend beautifully with the mountain backdrop.

As you cycle toward Arnoldstein, you’ll ride at the foot of the Carnic Ridge. Time and again, in the tri-border region of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia, impressive views of numerous mountain peaks open up before you. At Lake Faaker See, the turquoise waters, which are among Carinthia’s most striking natural gems, are sure to delight you. You’ll then cross the Drau River on your way to Lake Wörthersee. In Velden, an elegant resort town awaits you with its famous lakeside promenade, Velden Castle, and lively atmosphere right on the lakeshore.

Today’s loop ride takes you through a beautiful hilly landscape into the Keutschach Lake Valley. Flower-adorned farms, wooded ridges, and picturesque villages define the landscape. Lake Hafner, Lake Keutschach, Lake Bassgeigen, and Lake Rauschele accompany you along the way to Keutschach. You’ll then cycle to the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee to Klagenfurt. The state capital enchants visitors with its historic old town, the Lindwurm Fountain, and the magnificent Renaissance buildings surrounding Neuer Platz. Via the Lend Canal, you’ll return to the lake and, along its shore, back to Velden.

First, follow the bike path along the northern shore of Lake Wörthersee, before the route takes you through the diverse Carinthian countryside. The Glan River accompanies you to Feldkirchen, where the historic old town and traditional townhouses invite you to make a brief stop. The route continues to Lake Ossiach, which, with its clear waters and the former Benedictine Abbey of Ossiach, is one of the cultural highlights of the region. Cycling along the lake and through Landskron with its famous castle, you’ll finally make your way back to Villach.

Individual departure or you have the option to extend and spend a few more days in the Carinthian lake district. It is definitely highly recommended!
