Wine & More

In the south-east of Styria, on the border with Slovenia, where vineyards and wellness oases abound, a certain type of person is likely to feel particularly at home:

The type of person who is always up for a sporty challenge - but who never says no to hearty culinary delights. Look forward to five challenging cycling stages that are all about variety.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 7-day round trip in the Graz area

Ease into your cycling holiday by exploring the beautiful old town of Graz.

On this stage, Eastern Styria welcomes you to the historic town of Gleisdorf, with all its art and culture, and the Eastern Styrian Roman Wine Route, which will whet your appetite for the rest of your journey through the wine country.

The scenic cycle tour continues through Austria's largest apple-growing region and the Pöllau Valley Nature Park, home to the Hirschbirne, a unique ancient pear variety that is protected by the EU. The tour ends in the historic town of Hartberg, which lies at the foot of the vineyards of the East Styrian Roman Wine Route and may make you want to stay an extra day or two.

This is a day for true connoisseurs, as the route takes you from the historic old town of Hartberg and its surrounding vineyards right into the heart of the Styrian thermal region Thermenland. Whether it's an award-winning restaurant or a wine tavern, in Thermenland, the tables are laden with regional specialities.

More and more wine lovers are falling for the fine wines from Austria's south-easternmost region. Four wine routes promote the vines grown on the fertile, volcanic soil in the humid Mediterranean climate. Today's stage takes you through the Thermenland region to the pretty town of Fehring.

This wine-growing region in south-eastern Styria, with its unique location on the slopes of eroded volcanoes, is made up of many small islands of wine. 1,400 hectares of vineyards are cultivated here, in particular around the villages of Klöch, St. Anna am Aigen and Straden.

The route from thermal spa to thermal spa - from Loipersdorf to Bad Radkersburg - is quite challenging at times, with short climbs and descents among the vineyards. Numerous inns and wine taverns allow you to stop for a break and refreshments though, making the whole tour an enjoyable experience.

The Sausal Wine Route at the start and the Schilcher Wine Route at the end of the tour will guide you on today’s stage of the Styrian Wine Country Cycle Tour. As you cycle through the Sulmtal valley, you will see beautiful vineyards to your left and right, and also numerous seed oil mills.

At the end of today's stage, you will reach Deutschlandsberg, the capital of the Schilcher region, which is named after its wine. The last few kilometres to Stainz take you through the heart of the Schilcherland region.

From Stainz, with its magnificent castle, the route back towards Graz takes you through the heart of Schilcherland with its small, idyllic villages nestled among the vineyards and past seed oil mills which will tempt you to stop for a bite to eat.

Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye. Alternatively, you can extend your stay in Graz to enjoy the city's great atmosphere.

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
