The Danube-Lake Constance Cycle path

Upper Swabia offers the best conditions and a beautiful landscape for bike tours. On this tour, sporty and ambitious bikers explore the hilly landscape between Danube and lake and then cross the Wurttembergian part of the Allgaeu. The change between the lively Lake Constance with its beautiful alpine panorama and the calm landscapes in the idyllic Upper Swabia, like the Wurzacher Ried or the Federsee Lake, will still make you rave for a long time.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day round trip in the Constance area

Take the opportunity to visit the island of Mainau, wander through Constance’s old town or visit the aquariums in the Sea Life Center and go to the Archaeological Museum.

The car ferry takes you to the other side of the lake, to Meersburg. First you cycle along the lake bank to Immenstaad, where you turn your back on the lake and head for Markdorf. Along the next stretch, willows and a lot of nature define the look of the Upper Swabian countryside here.

The basin of Federsee Lake is an ancient cultural region. Archaeologists have made important discoveries on digs here, from the Palaeolithic Age and the pile dwellings from the Bronze Age. Soon after, you reach the Danube. You now have two options: the prettier option involves a 10 km longer cycle via Blaubeuren and the Blautopf, one of the biggest karstic springs in Germany, to Ulm. The slightly shorter stretch takes you along the Danube to Ulm.

Gentle hills, upland moorland and lakes characterise this part of the tour in northern Upper Swabia. On the way you should definitely visit the mighty imperial abbey in Ochsenhausen. Then it‘s not far to today‘s destination, Bad Wurzach which features an upland moor, Wurzacher Ried, the largest of its kind that is intact in Central Europe.

Today‘s section is shorter than the day before, but challenging! You explore the Württemberg Allgäu and cycle via Leutkirch and Isny to Wangen in Allgäu, where you should go on a walk through this beautifully unspoiled old town.

You cycle along the Danube-Lake Constance-cycle path today, through the Tettnang hops area, the most southern hopsgrowing area in Germany. Pedaling through orchards, you cycle to Kressbronn, where you find yourself back on Lake Constance. Along the Lake Constance cycle path, you cycle to Bregenz, the capital town of the Vorarlberg region of Austria and famous for its annual festival on the world‘s largest lake-stage.

Now, you cycle through the nature reserve of the Rhine Delta, where the Alpenrhein flows into Lake Constance. At Altenrhein, you cross the border to Switzerland and follow the cycle path to Arbon, Romanshorn and then back to Constance. The cycle path is almost always right at the side of the lake here. This stretch us flat and easy to cycle, unless in a stronger westerly wind. You will frequently pass places where you can go swimming and refresh yourself in the lovely cool waters of the lake.

After breakfast you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
