Active Cycling along Altmühl and Danube

Sporty challenges, a fantastic landscape and historic and cultural sights expect you on this bike tour. You cycle along the Altmühl to Kehlheim. From there, you cycle on the popular Donau cycle path to the “three rivers city” Passau. You spend one night in Regensburg, the city with more than 1500 historically protected buildings. In 2006, the city was declared a World heritage site by the UNESCO.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day tour from Rothenburg to Passau

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the epitome of medieval town romantics and has been immortalized by artists such as Spitzweg and Richter. Be guided through the town in the evening by the night watchman and learnall kinds of interesting facts about life in Rothenburg back in the day.

You start in the Taubertal valley and set off for the nearby Altmühl spring. Passing Zollernburg in Colmberg, you cycle through the Franconian Lake District, which came about due to a project to balance out Bavaria‘s water resources. You cycle on via medieval Herrieden to your destination, Gunzenhausen.

On today‘s section, the valley gets narrower. The Altmühl cuts its way deep into the rocks and the twelve apostles – an impressive formation of the rock here – is waiting to be admired! You will continue to pass magnificent castles on the way to Eichstätt, a former diocesan town, with delightful Baroque architecture.

Before you leave Eichstätt, you should take the opportunity to visit the Jura Museum, where you can view numerous dinosaur fossils from the surrounding areas. Today your bike tour will take you through the juniper heath of the Altmühl valley and by the quite nice castle Burg Kipfenberg. You will pass Beilngries, which is just in between Altmühl river and the Main-Danube-Canal, and Dietfurt, before you reach Riedenburg.

You cycle along the canal to Essing, which features Europe‘s longest wooden bridge. Just round the corner is the Schulerloch stalactite cave, bedroom to bats in the winter - but can be visited in the summer. After a short section cycling, you soon arrive in Regensburg. The town is considered Germany‘s best-preserved major town and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Danube curves its way gracefully through the wide expanse of the countryside and you cycle alongside. In Straubing, the capital of the „Gäuboden“ region, take a break before tackling the last few kilometres of the day. You finally arrive at the gate to the Bavarian Forest: Deggendorf, Gothic and Baroque characterize the old town

Today‘s route includes the small historic town of Vilshofen, which you might have heard of in connection with the CSU Chairman, politician Strauss‘ Ash Wednesday speech. You will soon reach your destination of the three-rivers-town and former diocesan town of Passau. Let your tour come to a pleasant end with a walk through the old town.

After breakfast you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
