Picturesque and impressive: the Salzkammergut. Vast plains and glistening lakes stretch in front of imposing mountain peaks. Lush valleys to enchant you, mountain passes to challenge you, and in between it all are thrilling descents and relaxed lakeside tours.

The later stages of the tour take you beyond the borders of Salzburg into the green Steiermark and neighbouring Bavaria.

Whether it's gentle ups and downs or sweat-inducing serpentines, beautiful views are guaranteed! And thanks to PEDALO’s twin concept, you can decide for yourself how much sweat you want to shed each day - for ultimate freedom on two wheels.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day round trip in the Salzburg area

If you have booked rental bikes, you will receive them on the evening of your arrival. Your travel documents will be waiting for you at the starting hotel.

A wonderful warm-up tour with small inclines. The route takes you around the Untersberg to the famous Königssee. The road between Berchtesgaden and Grödig is perfectly straight, so you can experiment with drafting if you are in a group.

If you want more, you can also do a quick lap of the Roßfelder Höhenstraße.

A cycle path takes you out of Salzburg, and then you have two routes to choose from. You can follow the Tauern Cycle Path along the Salzach Valley or take a high-altitude variant which leads you deep into the Lammer Valley before crossing the Gschütt Pass (957 m) into the Gosau Valley.

If you still have energy left, you should definitely cycle up to Lake Gosau, where the Dachstein Glacier is reflected in the lake. From there, it's downhill all the way to Lake Hallstatt.

Take the train to the Ausseerland region. You will get to explore either the Tauplitzalm or the Loser, depending on which route you choose. Right at the start, you cycle past the famous Kulm ski jump and arrive in Bad Mitterndorf. Next you will cross a small pass over to the Grundlsee, from where you can cycle back to the mysterious Toplitzsee. Alternatively, you can continue on to the picturesque Lake Altaussee and cycle up to the Loser - a wonderful mountain road with sensational views. The return route takes you via Bad Aussee and the small Koppen Pass to Lake Hallstatt.

You will follow the lakeside road to Bad Goisern, and from there wind along the Traun River to the imperial city of Bad Ischl. Today's route is a leisurely one, so take your time exploring.

Continue to Lake Wolfgang, where you can make a detour to St. Wolfgang or cycle straight on to St. Gilgen and Lake Mondsee. The route takes you along Lake Mondsee, then climbs up to St. Georgen im Attergau.

Cycle over rolling hills from Attersee to Traunsee, home to the famous town of Gmunden. Relax with a coffee on the lake promenade, because afterwards you will cycle back to Attersee via the Gmundnerberg.

Wonderful views of the lakes and the Tote Gebirge (Dead Mountains) await you. Alternatively, you can also take the Tarock cycle path.

In the morning, you will cycle past meadows and small hamlets before following the lake shore to the town of Mondsee with its beautiful market square. Then it's a gentle climb to Irrsee, where you still have wonderful views of the lake and mountains. This is followed by a steep but short climb up to Sommerholz. Ahead of you lie the Alpine foothills, behind you the Salzkammergut.

The route then undulates past meadows and forests to Eugen Dorf, where you follow the former railway line down to Salzburg. A short section of the stage runs along the 2008 World Championship route. This is followed by a 12 km descent – the perfect way to end your road bike tour.

Have you fallen in love with the city of Mozart? Why not stay a little longer? We would be happy to book your extra nights for you.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
