Gems of the Dordogne

The Périgord is one of the top cycling destinations in France. And rightfully so... A rich and diverse terrain, with quiet shady back roads, lush green valleys, and a variety of landscapes with breath-taking views. The area is also steeped in a rich history. This trip takes in the discovery of the Vézère Valley and its prehistoric sites, famous medieval fortresses and sleepy forgotten villages, as well as the Dordogne Valley… But it’s also a culinary paradise for meat lovers: we return to our hotel at the end of each day, where you can look forward to  relaxing evenings and fine local food and wine.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day location-based tour in the Tamniès area

Starting from your accommodation, we offer 7 different daily loops, each with 2 levels of difficulty. You can do these daily tours (see below) during your stay depending on your condition, weather conditions, daily shape and taste.

A half-day road bike loop, to break in or relax in the middle or at the end of your stay. Level 1 will take you as far as Montignac, while level 2 will take you even further north ibis to Sainte Orse. Discover the beautiful Vézère Valley and its ancient villages (St. Léon, Montignac, Thonac) as well as the prehistoric site of La Roque Saint Christophe on this round trip.

Humans have inhabited the Périgord since prehistoric times. So they are far from being not the first to roam these magnificent landscapes! Since for at least 30,000 years, Homo Sapiens has been using the numerous hollows for shelter and the abundant local resources for to live. Today, we set out on our bikes on what may be the the most beautiful loop of the week: the magnificent Vézère reveals all its secrets to us; among the villages that line up like a string of pearls.

We start our day along the eastern heights of Sarlat before crossing the Dordogne and reaching the Lot further south. The highlight of this loop is the picturesque village of Gourdon and its medieval alleys. Here, the truffle is king. On the way up, the route passes through Domme, considered one of the most beautiful villages of the Périgord. Visit highly recommended!

Today we attack the western foothills of the Causse du Quercy. A day in the same sector as the loop "The Lot and its truffle fields", Gourdon is again on the program. On top there are a lot of small lost roads with a lot of charm.

On today's tour you will discover the treasures of the Dordogne Valley. After the village of Saint Cyprien, we discover the hostile twin castles of Beynac and Castelnaud la Chapelle. A leap into the Middle Ages! Further south, on the border with the Lot department, the small valley of Céou welcomes us. Via Sarlat, the capital of the Périgord Noir, we will return to our accommodation.

Vézère, Dordogne... two valleys that you now know a little, well, even passionately! This time we head west towards Bergerac, more precisely in the area of Limeuil, where these two remarkable valleys and their rivers meet. A relatively flat stage with (relatively) little elevation gain and a gentle profile, for enjoying, relaxing or kicking into high gear. Perhaps this will be your last stage to say goodbye to this magnificent region.

There are places in the world of cycle touring that are just so picturesque and diverse that once you have arrived, you can't tear yourself away. They have so much to offer that you will struggle to decide which direction to cycle in first. These special spots are where we at PEDALO have created our location-based tours just for you.

Ride away, but always stay in the same place

In contrast to staged tours and round trips, you won't cycle from place to place, and thus from hotel to hotel. Instead, you will stay in one and the same accommodation for the duration of your road biking holiday. This hotel will be the starting point for fascinating cycling excursions in the surrounding area. Every day, there will be new routes for you to explore. Every evening, you will return to hosts who put their heart and soul into their work and offer you a pleasantly cosy atmosphere with a healthy dose of class. Instead of having to pack your bags each day, you get to focus on your passion for road cycling.

For beginners, improvers – and anyone seeking a breath of fresh air

The location-based tour is a great choice for anyone who would like to try out the adventure of road cycling for the first time. It offers that extra touch of flexibility that beginners will appreciate. If your muscles are hurting after the previous day's climb or if the weather isn't good enough for an extended road bike tour, you can easily take a day off and relax in your hotel. A sporting challenge and a pleasant holiday go hand in hand with the PEDALO location-based series.

You will navigate using GPS data. You therefore need your own GPS device and/or the free, user-friendly PEDALO app.

You will also receive daily map sheets from us with elevation profiles and basic information about the route, which you can use to get a general overview.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
