Between Alps and Provence

The Diois is a superb mix of the Alps and Provence... and a great area for road biking: countless small passes, mountain roads with little traffic (and the Vercors cliffs as a backdrop), charming Provençal villages, and varied landscapes (forests of pine and hardwoods, wild rivers, vineyards, lavender and sunflower fields, orchards...). This is a centre based cycling holiday; you install your base camp in the pretty little village of Chatillon-en-Diois, perfect for a stroll or a drink in the sun after a day of cycling...

Day
01

Arrival in Châtillon-en-Diois (organised by the traveller)

Road cycling day south of Châtillon. Exploring the upper Drôme valley to the Claps rockfall. Return via the Col Miscon (1,022 m). Levels 2 and 3 treat themselves to a detour to the small town of Valdrôme via the Col du Fays (1,052 m).

Head west on this sunny day! We cycle down the Drôme and discover the heart of the Diois with the medieval town of Die and its lively streets. On levels 1 and 2, we climb in the picturesque Roanne valley and up to the Col de Pennes (1,040 m), while the fittest can tackle the Col de la Chaudière (1,047 m) below the peaks of the "3 Becs" beforehand.

The sportiest road bike day of the week. We leave the Diois north towards Trièves. This wide plateau is nestled between the mountains of the Dévoluy and the eastern slopes of the Plateau du Vercors. The climb up to the Col de Grimone through the famous Gats gorge (1,319 m) and to the Col de Lus la Croix Haute is obligatory, while the level 2 and 3 routes take in many of the small roads of Trièves. We keep a constant eye on Mont Aiguille, the famous table mountain of the Dauphiné Alps. All routes then lead us back to the now "home" Diois via the beautiful Col de Menée (1,457 m).

On today's loop, we point our GPS devices south. Our level 1 route takes us to the small village of Valdrôme via the Col de Fays (1,052 m), while the level 2 and 3 routes head towards Mont Ventoux with the Montagne de Raton and the village of La Motte Chalancon.

The starting point of today's loop is the main village of the Diois, Die (if you do not have your own vehicle on site please indicate this when booking). The village is located at the foot of the impressive southern falls of the Vercors. The level 1 and 2 routes take us through the Diois hinterland on quiet roads, including the Quint and Gervanne valleys. The level 3 route takes the more athletic among us up to the Col de Rousset (1,249 m), the gateway to the famous Vercors plateaus, and back over the no less impressive Col de la Bataille (1,313 m).

Vallon de Combeau, Cirque d'Archiane, Gorges des Gâts, Vallon de Borne - four beautiful routes as little side trips and appetisers that we can recommend as half-day excursions.

There are places in the world of cycle touring that are just so picturesque and diverse that once you have arrived, you can't tear yourself away. They have so much to offer that you will struggle to decide which direction to cycle in first. These special spots are where we at PEDALO have created our location-based tours just for you.

Ride away, but always stay in the same place

In contrast to staged tours and round trips, you won't cycle from place to place, and thus from hotel to hotel. Instead, you will stay in one and the same accommodation for the duration of your road biking holiday. This hotel will be the starting point for fascinating cycling excursions in the surrounding area. Every day, there will be new routes for you to explore. Every evening, you will return to hosts who put their heart and soul into their work and offer you a pleasantly cosy atmosphere with a healthy dose of class. Instead of having to pack your bags each day, you get to focus on your passion for road cycling.

For beginners, improvers – and anyone seeking a breath of fresh air

The location-based tour is a great choice for anyone who would like to try out the adventure of road cycling for the first time. It offers that extra touch of flexibility that beginners will appreciate. If your muscles are hurting after the previous day's climb or if the weather isn't good enough for an extended road bike tour, you can easily take a day off and relax in your hotel. A sporting challenge and a pleasant holiday go hand in hand with the PEDALO location-based series.

You will navigate using GPS data. You therefore need your own GPS device and/or the free, user-friendly PEDALO app.

You will also receive daily map sheets from us with elevation profiles and basic information about the route, which you can use to get a general overview.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
