Time for legwork

Salut and bienvenue to the volcanic region of Auvergne, where the Massif Central dominates. The département Cantal is tucked away in the deepest, least-explored part of France, and is far from anything you've ever experienced as a cyclist. The surroundings are special, unusual - and simply maqnifique!

If you follow this cycling insider's tip and 'get lost' here, you’d better have a taste for challenging rides and elevation gains. One thing's for sure: there will be no shortage of climbs and steep stretches to conquer.

No matter how big the effort though, every bead of sweat will be worth it! Unique, unspoilt landscapes, awe-inspiring heights, deep valleys, exquisite cuisine, delicious wine, tasty cheeses, pure spring water and countless architectural delights will be your reward. Savour, marvel - and enjoy!

For your 8-day location-based tour in the Lavigerie area

Bienvenue and welcome to Auvergne. In the idyllic mountain village of Lavigerie, the river Santoire gushes forth and the summit of the mighty Puy Mary watches over your charming guesthouse. The Massif Central awaits, with a lot of exciting cycling in store for you over the next few days.

In a landscape formed by fire-spewing volcanoes, nature still reigns supreme. As you pedal along the Cézallier plateau with its iconic mountain Signal du Luguet, you will hardly see a tree and only pass a few settlements. Instead, you'll spot the famous cows of Auvergne, which are held in such high esteem here that a railway station was built for them to travel to their summer pastures.

Depending on your mood and fitness, you have a choice of different routes with varying challenge profiles.

Today you can accumulate almost two and a half kilometres of elevation if you take the longest route through the Plateau du Nord, where high plateaus alternate with mountains. With many tough climbs to conquer, there will be no time for boredom!

Depending on your mood and fitness, you have a choice of different routes with varying challenge profiles.

Aside from steep and remote mountains, Auvergne is also home to many venerable settlements. High on the basalt plateau stands the medieval town of Saint-Flour, its stone cathedral and bridge blending perfectly into the rocky landscape. Alleuze castle is a high point of the day - literally and figuratively.

Depending on your mood and fitness, you have a choice of different routes with varying challenge profiles.

Artense is a varied landscape, characterised by undulating hills. Here you will find green pastures, deep lakes and windswept forests. Become one with the untamed landscape and let your inner cyclist run wild.

Today is the high point of your road bike tour through the Auvergne - you will conquer the Col du Pas de Peyrol, the highest road pass in the Central Massif. It lies beneath the mighty Puy Mary, which rewards your efforts with breathtaking views as far as the Alps and the Pyrenees.

Depending on your mood and fitness, you have a choice of different routes with varying challenge profiles.

As the name suggests, this stage offers some particularly beautiful forest views. The tops of the ancient Pinatelle trees are followed by the peaks of the two great volcanic mountains of the Auvergne, the old Cantal and the newer Puy de Sancy. Today you will follow small mountain roads where you will not only have a clear view, but also a clear run - you will meet hardly any traffic here.

Depending on your mood and fitness, you have a choice of different routes with varying challenge profiles.

Did Auvergne enchant you with its volcanoes, mountain passes, Romanesque churches and old castle ruins? If you want to stay a little longer, we can book extra nights for you.

There are places in the world of cycle touring that are just so picturesque and diverse that once you have arrived, you can't tear yourself away. They have so much to offer that you will struggle to decide which direction to cycle in first. These special spots are where we at PEDALO have created our location-based tours just for you.

Ride away, but always stay in the same place

In contrast to staged tours and round trips, you won't cycle from place to place, and thus from hotel to hotel. Instead, you will stay in one and the same accommodation for the duration of your road biking holiday. This hotel will be the starting point for fascinating cycling excursions in the surrounding area. Every day, there will be new routes for you to explore. Every evening, you will return to hosts who put their heart and soul into their work and offer you a pleasantly cosy atmosphere with a healthy dose of class. Instead of having to pack your bags each day, you get to focus on your passion for road cycling.

For beginners, improvers – and anyone seeking a breath of fresh air

The location-based tour is a great choice for anyone who would like to try out the adventure of road cycling for the first time. It offers that extra touch of flexibility that beginners will appreciate. If your muscles are hurting after the previous day's climb or if the weather isn't good enough for an extended road bike tour, you can easily take a day off and relax in your hotel. A sporting challenge and a pleasant holiday go hand in hand with the PEDALO location-based series.

You will navigate using GPS data. You therefore need your own GPS device and/or the free, user-friendly PEDALO app.

You will also receive daily map sheets from us with elevation profiles and basic information about the route, which you can use to get a general overview.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
