Tire tracks and tasty wines

You can find it all in Styria! Dotted with vineyards, this landscape is made for cycling. The idyllic villages and small towns along the route make every stop a cultural and culinary delight. Names such as Schilcherland and the Southern Styrian Wine Route reveal which fruit flourishes in these regions, and Graz is not called the gourmet capital of Austria for nothing.

Every now and again, two blue ribbons will be your guides; the Mur and Sulm rivers which wind their way through the fertile greenery. They will lead you to the typical pumpkin seed oil mills, to magnificent castles, through shady floodplain forests and colourful villages that will tempt you to stop and enjoy the views.

So, what are you waiting for? Head for Styria’s wine paradise, where cycle paths and vineyards stretch to the horizon.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day round trip in the Graz area

Start your cycling holiday by exploring the beautiful old town of Graz. Here you will also receive your travel documents and hire bikes (if booked).

Today, you have a few options: Pop in to the Stainz Weinhaus, or visit Stainz castle with its hunting museum. In 1229 there was already a church here, which was developed into a magnificent monastery complex. Since 1840, the castle has been owned by the great Styrian Archduke Johann and his descendants, the Counts of Meran.

For a special experience, you can ride the 'Flascherl' train from Stainz to Preding and back (optional).

Today's stage is all about pumpkin seed oil and Schilcher wine. The Schilcher cycle path will lead you into the Schilcher wine region. An extremely varied route then takes you through idyllic villages and forests to Eibiswald.

After a short detour into the centre of the lively market town of Eibiswald, you will head east through picturesque countryside. The unique vineyards of the South Styrian Wine Route accompany you on your journey to Leutschach, where you will spend the next two nights.

How you spend today is entirely up to you. How about a cycle to Kitzeck, the highest wine-growing village? Maribor is also not far away, and its beautiful old town is well worth a visit.

Alternatively, you can just get to know the area and enjoy a good glass of wine.

Today's route takes you through picturesque countryside and small villages to the wine town of Leibnitz. With its beautiful historic centre, Leibnitz is considered the gateway to the South Styrian Wine Road.

A leisurely cycle along the Mur cycle path will take you past colourful villages and lush fields. Ride back to Graz through shady riverside forests - or, if your legs are tired, you can take the train back.

After a restful night, it's time to say goodbye to the City of Culture Graz. Would you like to stay a little longer? We can book additional nights for you.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
