From the urban pulse of Oslo to idyllic beaches, enchanted country roads and rolling hills all the way to the west coast of Sweden, you will experience the impressive diversity that only Scandinavia can offer. Many pleasant surprises await you along the way, whether it is a café with a sea view, a historic open-air museum or simply a quiet place to pause and reflect. And  when the evening sun makes the water glisten golden, you will truly feel the joy of exploring this famous fjord by bike. This is not just a cycle route - it is an invitation to let yourself be carried away by the Nordic lightness of being.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 7-day round trip in the Oslo area

The capital of Norway is picturesquely situated on the Oslo Fjord, surrounded by forests, islands and waterways. This metropolis combines modern architecture with a rich history and is known for its lively cultural scene, sustainable urban planning and high quality of life. With numerous museums, parks and cycle paths, it is an ideal destination for culture and nature lovers alike.

You leave Oslo on National Cycle Route No. 1, which takes you along the Oslo Fjord. Picturesque suburbs such as Sandvika and Asker invite you to linger. Along the coastline, there are magnificent views of the sea, and beautiful beaches will tempt you to take a dip in the cool water. In Asker, it is worth visiting the open-air museum before continuing along small country roads towards Lier. The last stretch takes you along the Drammenselva river and directly into the centre of Drammen - a cultural gem which is easy to explore on foot.

Today, you will once again follow the course of the Drammenselva river, which will guide you right out of the city. Passing through gently rolling countryside, you will quickly reach Sande. Now you will follow the fjord again and get to enjoy some breathtaking views. In Holmestrand, you will find numerous restaurants that are ideal for a lunch break. You can also take a relaxing stroll along the harbour or a refreshing dip in the cool water. The Karljohansvern peninsula on the northern edge of Horten was once the base of the Norwegian Navy, but today you will find a museum complex there that is well worth a visit.

The first part of the route follows the coastline with fantastic views of the fjord. Close to Borre, you will pass the historic centre of Midgard, with an impressive number of burial mounds from the Viking Age. Soon you will reach Åsgårdstrand, where Edvard Munch spent many summers. His house is now a small museum. Tønsberg is Norway's oldest town; at its harbour, you can marvel at a replica of the famous Oseberg ship. As you continue, you will cycle through extensive farmland and pass small idyllic villages until you finally reach Sandefjord. In the evening, an approximately 2.5-hour ferry ride will take you to Strömstad on the eastern shore of the fjord.

You will ease into the day with a trip in our bike bus to Fredrikstad. There, you will find one of the best-preserved fortresses in Northern Europe - a gem combining tradition and nature. Today’s cycle first takes you to the coast. The car-free island of Hankø is well worth a visit before you cycle inland, passing extensive fields and meadows. Your destination, Moss, was once the centre of the paper, glass and metal industries. Thanks to its numerous galleries and cultural events, the small town is now a lively centre for contemporary art. More than 50 bathing spots along the fjord draw tourists on day trips.

Today's stage takes you away from Moss along quiet country roads and cycle paths, past historic estates and through idyllic villages. The many photo opportunities and cafés along the way will allow you to take plenty of breaks. The last section offers magnificent panoramic views as it brings you along the fjord and back to the vibrant metropolis of Oslo again with all its museums and trendy neighbourhoods. The modern architecture in the harbour district contrasts charmingly with historic landmarks such as the Royal Palace.

Your Oslo Fjord cycling tour ends after breakfast, and you will begin your journey home with countless impressions in your luggage. We would be happy to book an extended stay for you if you wish to explore the Norwegian capital further.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
