We usually associate the province of Noord-Holland with the capital Amsterdam, but Noord-Holland has much more to offer than the metropolis! You will find everything that is so typical of Holland in this province: beautiful natural landscapes with national parks, rare flora and fauna, windmills, the famous cheese market in Alkmaar, flower bulb fields, picturesque fishing villages, the Wadden Sea and, of course, cities rich in art and culture.

Noord-Holland is also the right place for a beach holiday: you will find sandy beaches around every corner. And for culinary delights, there are small cafés and restaurants with fresh seasonal seafood on the menu.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 6-day round trip in the Amsterdam area

Explore the city’s extensive canal system or visit the museum district. Stroll through winding streets with narrow houses whose gabled facades are so typical of the cityscape. Wherever you go in Amsterdam, the bicycle is the best way to get around. A glass of beer in a good restaurant is the perfect way to end the day.

After leaving Amsterdam, you will soon reach the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. Many people still work in the old barns, mills, wooden houses and workshops here. You can learn a lot of interesting facts about the old Dutch life, wooden shoes and of course Dutch cheese. You will find Dutch specialities in the local restaurants and the perfect souvenir in the small shops. Your journey continues north through beautiful natural landscapes with lots of greenery. Your destination for the day is Alkmaar, whose famous cheese market takes place every Friday.

You will quickly reach Bergen aan Zee and the beautiful North Sea, which will now accompany you for most of the way to your stage destination Den Helder. The sea views are fantastic, and the numerous sandy beaches will tempt you to take a dip in the cool water. There are many small cafés and restaurants where you can stop for a bite. In Den Helder, you will still have time to stroll around the historic city centre.

You will encounter a lot of nature and agriculture on today's stage. In Anna Paulowna, the largest uninterrupted area of flower bulbs in the world, the famous Flower Days take place from the end of April to the beginning of May. During this time, the villagers decorate the surrounding polders with flower mosaics. In Werkdorp Wieringermeer, a memorial commemorates Europe's dark times. Medemblik is the oldest town in West Frisia and is an excellent place to stop for lunch. From there, it is only a short ride to Hoorn.

You will cycle to Volendam along the coast of the Markermeer, a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. There is much to see in the picturesque fishing village, where the colourfully decorated houses create a fairytale impression. In the Volendam Museum, you can learn all about the history of the town. The last stretch will take you through a water-rich and peaceful natural landscape back to your starting point for this trip, Amsterdam.

Your cycling holiday ends after breakfast. There is still much to discover in the capital of the Netherlands. We would be happy to book an extended stay for you.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
