The journey begins in time-honoured Würzburg. The residential city impresses with a remarkable cityscape and sets the mood for a relaxed bike tour. On the Main, lined with vineyards and forests, the cycle path leads you almost without any ascents to the „Snow White Town“ of Lohr and Wertheim, famous for its castle ruins visible from afar. You return to Würzburg on the Aalbach cycle path. The penultimate stage takes you to the Volkacher Mainschleife, the heart of Franconian wine-growing. The destination of the tour is Würzburg.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 7-day round trip in the Würzburg area

We welcome you warmly to the Main triangle – in the Residential and University town of Würzburg. This, Bavaria‘s sixth biggest town lies surrounded by vineyards and is watched over by Marienberg Fortress, which can be seen from afar. Pay a visit to the town‘s landmark and enjoy the beautiful views you get here of the area – a taste of where you‘re going to be cycling in the coming week.

After the Maindreieck (triangle) comes the Mainviereck (square). And the first corner of the square is Gemünden. You are in Spessart Nature Reserve. You get great views of the area from the ruins of Scherenburg Castle. Continue on now, winding along ever narrower bends around wooded hills. At Gemünden you meet the Sinn and Franconian Saale rivers. Continue on now, winding along ever narrower bends around wooded hills. At the end of the day you reach Lohr – on the River Lohr

The Main Valley gets narrower here and the countryside has a lot of forest and is peaceful and isolated. At Rothenfels, a Roman castle watches over the narrow valley and your route. Marktheidenfeld, between the Main river and Spessart, is a typical Franconian town known for its winemaking. You reach today‘s destination – in Wertheim.

Your cycle tour takes you upstream to Bettingen. You leave the Main and follow the Aalbach cycle path. Through the charming Aalbach valley, you cycle back to Würzburg with a few uphill stretches and a varied route. On the way, it is worth stopping at the former Benedictine monastery in Holzkirchen and at Uettingen Castle, which is in the classicist style. Visit a classical bakery in Würzburg. In these wine houses it is traditionally permitted to bring your own food and enjoy the drinks on offer.

From Würzburg, follow the 2-Franken-Radweg (2-Franconian Cycle Path) on your cycle tour around Würzburg, which takes you through wide open spaces with vegetable and grain fields. Volkach is one of the most important wine towns in Franconian wine country. Situated on a bend in the Main River, the small town looks back on a long history that was largely determined by winegrowing. Sample the delicious regional wines served in Volkach‘s old town wine taverns. You will spend the night in Volkach or Sommerach.

The cycling is wonderful along the Volkach Main river „loop“ in the shade of the river meadows. Via the wine-trading town of Kitzingen, you mostly follow the meandering Main into the vibrant town of Würzburg. This lively Baroque town, known for its culture, is located in the middle of vineyards and gazed down upon by Marienberg Fortress. Stunning sights such as St. Kilian‘s Cathedral, the Neumünster, the historic ensemble of the Lady‘s Chapel and Falcon House on the marketplace, the old Main Bridge and the traditional wineries in the centre of the historic quarter make Würzburg an absolute pleasure to experience.

After breakfast you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
