The waters of Lago Maggiore are sparkling in the sun, couples roam down the Piazza Grande and palm trees grow on the lake promenade: when staying in Ticino, you could easily forget that you are still in Switzerland. When going on this tour you discover one of the longest swiss valleys and visit Ticinos capital, the medieval city Bellinzona. You get to know many sides of the southernmost Swiss canton: close to the Lago Maggiore the landscape is charming and tender, in the Maggia Valley Ticino it is wild and defiant. But no matter how you discover this region: Ticino and its Lago Maggiore will put a spell on you!

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 6-day location-based tour in the Losone area

Arrive in Lucerne and check into your accommodation.

Starting at the hotel direction Locarno along the lake promenade you cycle to the flat Magadino area and go past small forests and big farming areas until you reach the city walls of Ticinos capital: Bellinzona. In this town you find many old castles, hidden places and the old city wall. After a short break you go past romantic towns back to Losone.

Today’s discovery leads to the the center of Ascona. You can leave your bicycle there and take the ship to the iles of Brissago. The Botanical Gardens house around 1'700 plant species. Back in Ascona the route leads you from the hectic city centre on small roads to the branchs of the valley Centovalli. Here you have to face one short uphill before visiting sleepy villages. The route then brings you on an easy path back to Losone.

More than 50 kilometres the river Maggia runs through the alps before finally flowing into the Lago Maggiore. You go past the waterfall at Monte Brolla until you reach the lovely town Maggia. There you have time for a short break and to visit the chapel Santa Maria with its wonderful frescos.

By bicycle to Locarno. The train brings you to Melide. Lake Lugano can definitely compete with Locarno and Ascona. Italien Dolce Vita, colourful villages with the typical stone church towers and even palms can be discovered today! A wonderful trip completes your cycle holiday in this region.

Your cycling holiday ends after breakfast, but there is still much to discover. We would be happy to book an extension stay for you.

Level

Occasional cyclists

You prefer flat terrain, but you won’t be put off by the occasional hill. There has to be the right mix of breaks, nature and culture. You enjoy exercise and bring some stamina and cycling experience to the table.

Topography

Every day you have to deal with small uphills, but these should be no obstacles even for unexercised cyclists.

Road conditions

The tours lead on tarmac and on gravel roads. In the city centres of Locarno and Ascona the cycle paths lead through pedestrian areas. Pushing the bicycle might be necessary here.

Route-finding & navigation

You will navigate by yourself using maps and/or GPS data.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
