Coast, lighthouses and the Wadden Sea

Cycling in East Frisia means cycling along the dykes and coast and past lighthouses. The East Frisian island of Norderney is particularly easy to explore by bike. You can enjoy the fresh sea breeze on the North Sea without a care in the world. But it is not only the stiff breeze that is typically East Frisian, but also the dreamy Fehn canals, unspoilt moorland and a very special kind of tea ceremony. Here it can also mean ‘cycling always hard in the wind’.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 6-day location-based tour in the Norden area

Your journey takes you to the oldest town in East Frisia - the town of ‘Norden’. In the late afternoon, the information meeting and bike handover (if booked) will take place.

Cycle along the dyke to the 600-year-old fishing village of Greetsiel and on to the Pilsum lighthouse. Cycling through the inland, you reach Eilsum, with its 36 metre high bell tower. You return northwards via the old Wirdum dyke.

Visit the island of Norderney today (ferry included) and unwind. Alternatively, the town of Norden also has plenty to offer, e.g. the tea museum, the museum railway or a trip to the seal breeding station in Norddeich.

You cycle first to the pirate's nest of the Störtebeker and on to Münkeboe, where you can gain an insight into the life and work of the inhabitants of a small moorland village 100 years ago in the Dörpmuseum. You reach Lütetsburg via Berumerfehn and Hage. The castle park is one of the largest and most beautiful in northern Germany, where you can round off the day in the castle park café.

From Norddeich you cycle along the East Frisian North Sea coast: possibility to discover Baltrum by ferry (not included, see note) or alternatively enjoy typical East Frisian tea and homemade cake (included) in Dornum.

Note: Baltrum ferry crossing (no bike transport possible)
The ferry to Baltrum is tide-dependent, so it is only clear at the time of booking whether a visit to Baltrum is possible. We are happy to take care of the booking, approx. € 33,- per person. It is also possible to cycle to the pier on the day of travel and then decide which alternative to cycle.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.

There are places in the world of cycle touring that are just so picturesque and diverse that once you have arrived, you can't tear yourself away. They have so much to offer that you will struggle to decide which direction to cycle in first. These special spots are where we at PEDALO have created our location-based tours just for you.

Keep riding, but always stay in the same place

In contrast to staged tours and round trips, you won't cycle from place to place, and thus from hotel to hotel. Instead, you will stay in one and the same accommodation for the duration of your cycling holiday. This hotel will be the starting point for fascinating cycling excursions in the surrounding area. Every day, there will be new routes for you to explore. Every evening, you will return to hosts who put their heart and soul into their work and offer you a pleasantly cosy atmosphere with a healthy dose of class. Instead of having to pack your bags each day, you simply get to ride your bike and enjoy your holiday.

For beginners, improvers - and anyone seeking a breath of fresh air

This type of cycling holiday is designed for anyone who likes to take it easy. If you’re feeling a bit too sore for cycling or the weather isn't looking good, you can simply take a day off. Location-based tours are also ideal for first-time cyclists who may not yet know exactly how much they can or want to tackle in a day. No unnecessary stress, just pure freedom - so your tour can be all about the joy of cycling!

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
