The itinerary

For your 9-day tour from Budapest to Belgrade

Explore the fascinating metropolis on the Danube. This city inspires with its magnificent architecture and impressive sights, such as the Parliament building, the Fisherman's Bastion and the Castle District. Take in the panorama from the Chain Bridge or unwind in the renowned thermal baths; Budapest is a city full of history, charm and unforgettable experiences.

Today you will say goodbye to the Hungarian capital. The first stage takes you through picturesque river landscapes and charming villages. Extensive fields lined with small farms and poplar groves promise ideal conditions for a relaxed ride. En route to the south, you will pass charming meadow landscapes and the oxbow lakes of the Danube, which are perfect for a short break in nature. The historic town of Ráckeve is located on Csepel Island, a green oasis in the Danube. Its Serbian Orthodox Church is well worth a visit, and the small cafés and boat moorings on the waterfront will tempt you to linger.

This relaxed stage takes you deep into the rural heart of southern Hungary. You will cycle mostly alongside the river, passing through idyllic landscapes, small farming villages, orchards and fields. You will discover the tranquil beauty of the Danube floodplains and can take a break in quiet csárdas or with local farmers. Our free shuttle service is available to take you comfortably from Harta and Géderlak to Kalocsa, but more ambitious cyclists can also choose to complete the entire stage. Kalocsa is famous for its Baroque architecture, Paprika Museum, and colourful folk costumes.

Today's stage takes you to the Danube-Drava National Park. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and ecologically valuable protected areas in Hungary. Stretching along the Danube and Drava rivers, it encompasses alluvial landscapes, oxbow lakes, forests, wetlands, and diverse meadows - a tranquil natural paradise just waiting to be explored by bike. In Baja, you can enjoy a traditional fish soup to fortify you for the last few kilometres to Mohács. This historic town is known for its multicultural population and the colourful Busó festival.

This cross-border stage connects Hungary and Croatia. The wide Danube-Drava delta is mostly flat and particularly scenic. You will cycle through tranquil river landscapes and small villages, as well as through the Kopački Rit Nature Park, which is one of the most important wetlands in Europe. In Batina, you can stop at the war memorial near the banks of the Danube to enjoy the impressive panoramic view. Osijek impresses with its Baroque cityscape, the banks of the Drava, and its lively, southern Croatian atmosphere.

This stage takes you from Osijek to Bačka Palanka and is defined by transitions, between countries, languages and cultures, as well as between city and rural idyll. Your route leads you through small Croatian villages characterised by agriculture and a mixture of Croatian, Hungarian and Serbian culture. At the end of the stage, you will reach the border with Serbia. Welcome to Vojvodina, a cultural melting pot with a history of Danube Swabians, Serbs, Hungarians and Croats. The Orthodox church in Bačka Palanka is well worth a visit. When you’re hungry, try the local cevapčići or Serbian goulash served with fresh bread.

Today's route takes you to Novi Sad, a lively university city and the capital of Vojvodina. You will experience a varied landscape of floodplains, vineyards and historic towns as you cycle alongside the Danube. A short detour will take you to Fruška Gora National Park, home to a variety of wild animals, rare plants and trees. These shaded valleys are also home to sixteen medieval monasteries that are well worth exploring. Finish the day with a glass of Vršac wine while watching the sparkling lights along the Danube promenade.

Once again, you will cycle alongside the Danube, now flanked by lush riverside forests. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere during a stopover in small villages such as Stari Slankamen, where you can visit the historic church and experience the local hospitality. Traditional wineries along the way will tempt you to sample the local grape varieties. Your destination is Belgrade, the vibrant capital of Serbia. There, you can explore the Kalemegdan Fortress and the lively Savamala district with its trendy cafés, art galleries, and exciting nightlife.

After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye and start the journey home - or we can book you an extension stay in Belgrade. Alternatively, you can book our return transfer by cycle bus as an optional extra.

Level

Occasional cyclists

You prefer flat terrain, but you won’t be put off by the occasional hill. There has to be the right mix of breaks, nature and culture. You enjoy exercise and bring some stamina and cycling experience to the table.

Topography

There are some steep inclines to contend with on short sections in Croatia and Serbia. The route is part of the EuroVelo Route No. 6 and is clearly signposted throughout. It mostly runs alongside the Danube or the Drava, occasionally leaving the riverbank to take you through the countryside.

Road conditions

You will mostly cycle on well-paved roads. In Hungary, you have the option of using embankment paths that are not fully tarmacked. The route runs on cycle paths and small side roads with little car traffic, as well as roads with heavier traffic. You should also expect increased traffic when entering or leaving the large cities of Budapest, Novi Sad and Belgrade.

Route-finding & navigation

This tour is offered as a semi-guided experience. You cycle independently, setting your own pace and stopping off wherever you like. You can easily navigate using our app, which also provides an overview of the local sights. However, one of our employees is always in the area and available to assist you if you encounter any problems. Thanks to our minibus with bike trailer, you also have the option of shortening the stage each day to suit your mood.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.

Every day, you and your tour group (6 to 16 people) will be taken to the starting point of the cycling stage by bus transfer. You will then cycle at your own speed, following the maps. The support van will stay close at hand with an English-speaking tour guide.
