On this bike path you will explore lowland forests, original villages and magical cities. Of course, the 3 metropolises Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest are best-known. In Carnuntum and in the Roman castle Kelemantia you find Roman relics from the past.

Discover the diversity of the flora and fauna in the lowland forests. The small villages, which you cycle through, still keep their original charm. You pass through the Rye Island that is a real natural paradise. Don´t forget the numerous castles and palaces, which are proudly situated nearby the Danube.

The small towns along the bike trail have a special flair and their charming historic centers invite visitors to discover and enjoy. Overall, this bike tour will inspire everybody!

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day tour from Vienna to Budapest

It is recommended to arrive early. This metropolis on the Danube has plenty to offer and it is worth to stay there for a longer time. Enjoy a cup of coffee and the typical Vienna cake "Sachertorte" in one of the numerous coffee houses or treat yourself to a roundtrip with the horse-drawn cab "Fiaker".

The first distance of your bike trip guides you through the national park Donau-Auen. There you will get to know the diversity of the flora and fauna as well as the manifold types of landscape. You pass the castle Orth and the village Eckertsau and reach Bad Deutsch-Altenburg

From Bad Deutsch-Altenburg/Hainburg you can make an excursion on the Roman bike trail (Römerweg) to Carnuntum. The archaeological park is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological sites in Austria.

After Hainburg you reach the border to Slovakia and its capital city Bratislava that is your next overnight stay. The shorter distance today allows plenty of time to visit the old part of this charming city.

You cycle a short distance in Slovak territory before you pass the Hungarian border in Rajká. Within the first few kilometers of your cycle trip in Hungary you will discover charming villages. The complete section is influenced by agriculture. Your route guides you through the so-called Szigetköz (a small Rye Island). This is characterized by numberless side arms of the Danube.

After arrival in Mosonmagyaróvár, which is also called "City of 17 bridges", your today´s cycle tour ends. We recommend a short walking tour in this charming city, before you take the train to Györ. The district capital offers many sights and a breathtaking historic center.

Today's section takes you from Györ to the divided city of Komárom/Komárno on a newly constructed cycle path. You always cycle close to the course of the Danube. In your stage destination, it is worth visiting Fort Monostor. It was built in the middle of the 19th century and belongs to one of the largest fortresses in Central Europe.

You can also relax in the thermal baths and savour regional delicacies in the local restaurants

Today´s route also runs near riverbanks in the flat Danube valley. In the course of this you pass different villages and while cycling you can view the vineyards in the background. Those interested in history should plan time for the Roman castle Kelemantia which is on the way. However, an absolute highlight today is Esztergom (also known as "Hungarian Rome"): Its basilica is the largest church of the country. Take time for a comprehensive visit!

Note: Depending on availability at the time of booking, the overnight stay will be either in Esztergom or in Visegrád. In the case of Esztergom, the boat trip from Szentendre to Budapest takes place on day 7. In the case of Visegrád, you will travel by boat from Esztergom to Visegrád on the 6th day. The daily distances mentioned remain identical in both cases. You will receive detailed information about where you will stay overnight with your booking confirmation. In addition, the current timetable for the 2025 cruise has not yet been finalized. The ship is expected to sail every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from the beginning of May to mid-September. Outside of this season or on other days of the week, you will receive a train ticket as a replacement.

In the first part, you cycle through the so-called ‘Danube Bend’, one of the most scenic sections of your cycle tour. The royal palace and castle of Visegrád will amaze you and the open-air museum and the baroque town centre of Szentendre invite you to linger and enjoy. You will spend the last few kilometres on a Danube boat, from where you can admire the surrounding landscape in a relaxed manner. Take a stroll through the Hungarian capital and reflect on all the wonderful impressions of your cycle tour.

If you cycled from Esztergom to Visegrad in the morning, the last part of the route from Szentendre today involves a boat trip or train transfer. If you start the stage in Visegrad, you cycle through to Budapest and thus also reach the same stage length.

In the Hungarian capital city, there are many things to discover. If you are interested in, we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you. Our transfer from Budapest to Vienna is very comfortable (this can be arranged at additional charge).

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
