Romance & Wine

Famous wines of Côte d’Or and one of the most varied and finest cuisines of France are the first things you think of when hearing “Burgundy”. Additionally a tour of Burgundy lives from the ideal combination of stunning countryside and splendid treasures of art. Everywhere on this tour you recognize the wealthy past of Burgundy, e.g. the Abbey of Cluny, founded 1000 years ago, or historic Beaune or many little villages scattered in the region. Burgundy is variety … and does not live from wine alone!

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day round trip in the Beaune area

Welcome by the tour guide in the late afternoon. Beaune is wine-capital of Burgundy and has a picturesque old town. Visit Hotel Dieu, the old hospital of poor.

The first stage takes you into the expansive vineyard landscape. Cycling via Chagny, you reach Château de Rully, a medieval fortress nestled among the vines. From Givry, you join the “Voie Verte,” a former railway line that leads you to the charming wine village of Buxy.

The Voie Verte offers relaxed cycling with only a few gentle inclines. In Cormatin, you'll find the largest château in Burgundy, and in Cluny, the impressive abbey complex, whose church was once the largest in all of Christendom. The day’s destination is Mâcon, a charming town on the Saône River with a southern flair – ideal for a pleasurable end to the day.

The route takes you leisurely along the "Voie Bleue" cycle path, following the Saône River through the gentle landscapes of Burgundy. In Tournus, a visit to the Romanesque Abbey of Saint-Philibert is well worth it before continuing through vineyards and charming villages. The destination is Chalon-sur-Saône, a vibrant town with historical charm, a picturesque old town, and inviting riverside promenades – perfect for a relaxed end to the stage.

Today, you cycle through the wide river landscape to Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, a charming town at the confluence of the Doubs and Saône rivers. Passing through small villages and along lush riverbanks, you reach Seurre, a great spot to take a break and enjoy some regional cuisine. Your journey continues to Saint-Jean-de-Losne, France’s largest inland port for recreational boating. Soak up the maritime atmosphere, relax in the cozy waterfront cafés, and enjoy the view of the many boats.

The route runs peacefully and close to nature along the Canal de Bourgogne – perfect for unwinding and enjoying the ride. You'll cycle through small villages, past locks and houseboats, always accompanied by the gentle flow of the canal. The path is almost entirely flat and low in traffic – ideal for relaxed hours in the saddle. The destination is Dijon, the historic capital of Burgundy. Look forward to a lively old town, the famous Owl Trail, and culinary delights in one of France’s most beautiful cities. Overnight stay in Dijon.

This route is considered one of the most beautiful wine trails in France. You'll cycle through the famous vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune – passing by vines, châteaux, and charming wine villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Savigny-lès-Beaune. The destination is picturesque Beaune, the heart of Burgundy wine country. Here, you can explore the historic old town and enjoy numerous opportunities for wine tasting. Overnight stay in Beaune.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
