Baltic Sea cycle route 1 (DE) | Flensburg - Lübeck

Germany's northernmost city was ruled by the Danish crown for over 400 years. 700 years of city history characterise the fjord city. Take a stroll through the charming alleyways of the old town centre.

Firstly, take the boat to Glücksburg. Take a look at the famous Renaissance castle, one of the most beautiful moated castles in Germany, before cycling through tranquil Angeln.

The Baltic Sea resort Damp is easily accessible via the peninsula Schwansen. There you can relax in a beach chair along the sandy 4 km beach. After your break you continue your journey through unspoilt nature, past old avenues, over gentle hills, and lush green forests to Eckernförde. Spend the evening at the beautiful and idyllic harbour promenade. Try the freshly caught fish in one of the cosy restaurants.

Today’s stage takes you to the Kiel Fjord, where the Kiel Canal reaches the Baltic Sea. Make a first stop in Falckenstein or Friedrichsort before crossing the fjord by ferry. In Laboe, you disembark and continue your journey by bike. Following the Baltic Sea coastline through the Probstei region, you cycle past the distinctive beach resorts of Kalifornien and Brasilien before reaching Schönberger Strand. From here, your route continues inland to the town of Schönberg.

You cycle back to the Baltic Sea coast and immerse yourself in the unspoilt nature of Schleswig-Holstein. The route takes you through former salt marshes and varied landscapes, passing historic manor houses and the characteristic "Knicks" - traditional hedgerows on earth banks that are a defining feature of the region’s countryside. Via Oldenburg in Holstein, you finally reach Heiligenhafen, where the fresh Baltic Sea air and wide sandy beaches await you.

Today’s cycling stage takes you via Großenbrode to the popular Baltic seaside resort of Grömitz. Here, the 400 -metre-long pier invites you to take a stroll and enjoy wonderful views across the Baltic Sea. At the eight-kilometre sandy beach, you are sure to find the perfect spot to relax, soak up the sun or take a refreshing swim. Continuing along the coast, you reach the charming harbour town of Neustadt in Holstein. Known as a filming location for the popular German TV series "Küstenwache" (Coast Guard), the town captivates visitors with its maritime atmosphere and coastal charm.

In Travemünde you can take a break to see Germany's oldest lighthouse. The seaside resorts of Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz have lovely sandy beaches and invite you to go in for a refreshing dip in the sea. Today you‘ll have frequent views of the Lübeck and Neustadt Bays.
