The five rivers challenge in Bavaria

Off to Bavaria: to the state of the white-blue flag, of rustic bon vivants and warm hospitality, to the state with an incredible number of breweries, but also an area of great history and Baroque. To a completely „new Bavaria“, far away from all those Bavarian cliches! The unspoiled countryside will impress you with its diversity and contrariness. The five rivers, Vils, Naab, Danube, Altmühl and Pegnitz will accompany you on your tour. Take time to enjoy the lovely old towns, the enchanting little villages and the varied countryside along the way. Experience the raw warmth of the people of the Upper Palatinate, the charm of Middle Franconia and the delicacies of Bavarian cuisine.

For your 6-day round trip in the Nuremberg area

Nuremberg – thousand years of history: The old imperial town, with its mighty castle, famous churches and museums attracts tourists from all over the world. Right in the centre of this metropolis with half a million inhabitants, the town houses, proud churches, the castle and 5 km of walls that circle the town have all been resurrected.

Starting in Nuremberg, you head in a south-easterly direction, following the Pegnitz and Ludwig-Danube-Main canal. Here, at the edge of the Franconian Uplands, cycling is easy, with no hills to worry about. From afar, the striking church towers of the old town and the ruins of Wolfstein Castle on the hills to the back of the town welcome you! Via Freystadt, you get to the Main-Danube-Canal, which now Status: 30.08.2024 shows you the way. Over quite some distance, you simply roll right next to the canal, downstream. And soon reach today‘s destination, Berching.

Today you‘ll be cycling along different waterways of the Altmühl river, known especially for their unspoiled nature. Via Dietfurt and Riedenburg, you get to Essing, which is home to one of the favourite holiday snaps of the entire Altmühl Valley. The two-storied tower with its 46 meter long wooden bridge. Following a level route, you now pedal past the well-known stalactite cave, Schulerloch, to Kelheim. Passing wooded slopes, you soon reach Regensburg.

You leave Regensburg and cycle along the Naab river surrounded by meadows, forests and fields. On both sides of the river, Jura rocks up to 100 metres high tower over the lovely valley. At the castle ruins of Kallmünz a change of river is finally announced: Here the Vils flows into the Naab. Those who are keen on culture should take a break at the Hammerherrenschloss in Theuern before continuing on to Amberg.

After a level section of the route, today you will encounter more hills. You cross one of the most wooded regions of Germany, „Hersbruck Switzerland“. The town of Hersbruck was the centre of hop growing and trade for hundreds of years, as witnessed still today by the pulleys and gables at the tops of the restored half-timber-framed houses. You leave Hersbruck through the famous water gate, and set of into Pegnitz Valley and its almost entirely unspoiled river countryside. Following lush green avenues and cycling through extensive parkland, you finally arrive in Nuremberg.

After breakfast you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
