Star of the South

Ready to cross some borders? We have just the road bike tour for you! Come spend a week in the beautiful spa town of Bad Radkersburg in southern Styria, and set off every day on tours that know no bounds. Often guided by the pristine Drava and Mur rivers as they meander their way through the 'Green March’, you will whizz through this diverse region on two tires.

The volcanic landscape of the Styrian Vulkanland, the green hills of Burgenland and the valleys of Carinthia await you. And beyond that: Slovenian vineyards, Hungarian baroque towns and the romance of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Croatia. Along the way you will find plenty of fresh produce to tickle your tastebuds, as well as towns full of architectural charm. Orchards, vineyards and vegetable fields alternate while small villages appear from behind the hills, and historic towns tell of past splendour and a vibrant present. The South can be so fascinatingly varied!

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day location-based tour in the Bad Radkersburg area

Make your way to Bad Radkersburg, the starting point of your cross-border road bike tour.

Ptuj and Maribor are beautiful old towns on the Drava River with interesting city centres (sightseeing recommended). On the way back to Bad Radkersburg, you cycle through beautiful countryside with small villages.

Transfer to Szentgotthárd, an old baroque town in Hungary. Your route takes you in an arc through Hungary and Burgenland. Back in Styria, you will follow the Slovenian border to Bad Radkersburg.

From the old imperial city of Varazdin (restored historic city centre), the route takes you to Ormoz by the Drava river and then through the wine region of Jeruzalem. You head back to Bad Radkersburg via Ljutomer on the Mur.

Head north into neighbouring Burgenland, where you will find the border triangle of Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. The tour returns through unspoilt Slovenia, past the famous Grad Castle.

Ride high above the reservoir where Carinthia meets Styria. Almost 1000m of sweeping curves will bring you down through the Sulmtal valley to the Mur cycle path. Return through little villages to Bad Radkersburg.

The thermal and volcanic region of Styria is an ideal gym for road bike cyclists. The rolling hills, interspersed with the odd steep climb, provide ideal training conditions – all in the midst of incredibly beautiful countryside and picturesque villages.

Time to say goodbye - or begin your extended stay in the Styrian border region.

There are places in the world of cycle touring that are just so picturesque and diverse that once you have arrived, you can't tear yourself away. They have so much to offer that you will struggle to decide which direction to cycle in first. These special spots are where we at PEDALO have created our location-based tours just for you.

Ride away, but always stay in the same place

In contrast to staged tours and round trips, you won't cycle from place to place, and thus from hotel to hotel. Instead, you will stay in one and the same accommodation for the duration of your road biking holiday. This hotel will be the starting point for fascinating cycling excursions in the surrounding area. Every day, there will be new routes for you to explore. Every evening, you will return to hosts who put their heart and soul into their work and offer you a pleasantly cosy atmosphere with a healthy dose of class. Instead of having to pack your bags each day, you get to focus on your passion for road cycling.

For beginners, improvers – and anyone seeking a breath of fresh air

The location-based tour is a great choice for anyone who would like to try out the adventure of road cycling for the first time. It offers that extra touch of flexibility that beginners will appreciate. If your muscles are hurting after the previous day's climb or if the weather isn't good enough for an extended road bike tour, you can easily take a day off and relax in your hotel. A sporting challenge and a pleasant holiday go hand in hand with the PEDALO location-based series.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
